Methodology
Studied and checked apps in the industry primarily catering to pet's wellbeing needs
Apps studied- Fitbark, Dogsee Chew, PetCare, Puppr, Tails Life, Dog Buddy
Key Learnings
Some of the apps were primarily focussed around keeping the pet active and tracking the pet's activities, location, calorie expenditure, quality sleep etc like Fitbark. Fitbark even used GPS system to track the dog's location.
Some apps focussed around dog training. Puppr provided live chat to pet parents with training experts for asking queries.
Dog Buddy is an app which provides features around dog healthcare like recording dog's milestones, tracking weight, tracking dog's vet medications, vaccinations, allergies. The app supports multiple dogs by profile creation (adding more than 1 pet profiles requires paid subscription of the app). In nutshell it is more of a medical diary for multiple pets. The ecosystem is not connected to Vet clinics in this app.
TailsLife focused on the community aspect of pets parenting where the user can post and view interesting pet stories around the world, add pets and get vaccination reminder. The user can also see various pet clinics in the vicinity by detecting location and check relevant details corresponding to each like distance from location, map to view directions, address, amenities at the clinic, calling the clinic and ratings & reviews.
Dogsee Chew leveraged on the budding industry of organic dog treats made from natural ingredients.

Key Learnings
  • There are various aspects to a pet's well being which includes pet grooming, nutrition, physiological, behavioural, preventive and curative, pet accessories / aids / furniture.
  • A particular pet behavioural pattern can have multiple implications to it, depending upon the context. eg. chewing- curiosity propelled viz completely normal with dogs whereas anxiety related chewing which indicates to some psychological disorder.
  • Pet health can be divided into two facets- preventive and curative. Preventive includes the measures to avoid a medical condition example deworming, vaccination, neutering etc. Curative means curing of a health problem which could be acute (like diarrhoea, tick fever, pet injuries, hairballs) or chronic in nature (like disabilities, age related ailments, STDs, Cancer, renal failure, Rabies, Parvirus, Distemper etc).
  • Homemade & natural, organic food are fast growing popularity over packaged food for cats & dogs. One in every 2 pet parents mix homemade food with packaged food to ensure the pet gets good diet.
  • Homemade & natural, organic food are fast growing popularity over packaged food for cats & dogs.
  • Although 51% people ask the vet doctor incase of any queries yet they aren't very comfortable as they feel judged. Social media is another budding concept to address pet related curiosities and queries.
  • Some of the common issues amongst pet parents include- deciding on nutrition, offering pets more mentally stimulating activities, struggle of cutting pet nails,  guilt of leaving pets alone at home while they are at work, expensive pet food and medicines, lack of availability of pet transport systems.

Key learnings with reference to segment
KEY LEARNINGS ACROSS SEGMENTS.png
Key learnings across all segments
  1. Food and diet regulations while the pet is on treatment are suggested by the vet himself / herself.

  2. Some of the vet clinics provide with a booklet where they log in diagnosis, prescriptions & relevant details. Every time a pet parent visits the clinic, he /she has to remember and carry along so that the doctor can view the medical history and act accordingly. In some cases the vet only gives a paper prescription, which the parent later pins to the pet’s medical folder kept at home. Vet hospitals are more systematic in their approach here, they enter the pet’s data into their systems rather than solely depending on hard copies.

  3. Regarding diet and nutrition, pet parents search online for pet recipes appropriate for their pet type and then discuss with their vets. Mostly pet parents preferred homemade recipe over the pedigree.

  4. Mostly pet parents feel keeping a pet and taking care of nutrition and health is taxing on their pockets.

  5. Pet transport was another common issue amongst the pet parents.
